The Anthropocene In Paintings: Ġulja Holland’s Latest Body Of Work Launching At Spazju Kreattiv
Local contemporary artist Ġulja Holland, renowned for her thought-provoking and politically engaged practice, is launching her fourth upcoming solo exhibition very soon.
Entitled ‘A New Gothic’, the exhibition shall draw on timely themes such as the Anthropocene epoch, eco-anxiety, and gender issues, challenging viewers to engage with the complexities of our world and to question their own place within it.
“I hope that my exhibition stimulates meaningful conversations and new insights into the challenges we face as a society,” Holland expressed.
Visitors will have the opportunity to view Holland’s largest body of work to date produced over the course of the past three years.
The paintings have been compiled over her time studying for her Master’s in London, at a residency at PADA Studios in Portugal, and upon her return to her homeland, Malta.
Through her use of vibrant colours, striking compositions and a surrealist style, Holland creates a visual language that speaks directly to the heart of these urgent concerns.
Holland’s fourth solo exhibition shall be curated by Andrew Borg Wirth. The collaborative project will also see her overlap with local and international artists, academics, and practitioners from across disciplines including Charlie Cauchi (MT) and Rieko Whitfield (UK).
The exhibition will be inaugurated by esteemed curator, art historian, and Sky Portrait Artist of the Year judge Kathleen Soriano (UK).
The opening night will be happening on 14th April at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta, Malta’s National Centre for Creativity, and it will be available for viewing between 14th April and 21st May.
Ġulja Holland is a figurative painter based between Malta and London. She graduated with an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London in 2021 and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Leeds Arts University in 2015.
Holland was shortlisted on an episode of the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year Program in 2020 and selected for the London Paint Club’s Best of 2021’ shortlist.
