The Dirge is an upcoming exhibition by the emergent artist Matthew Shirfield, curated by Roderick Camilleri, opening to the public on 2nd November in Valletta.

It showcases works that delve into the timeless tale of Faust, offering a fresh perspective through Shirfield’s unique artistic lens.

The exhibition presents a captivating exploration of the iconic figure of Doctor Faustus, the man who bartered his soul for knowledge and power. Shirfield’s works, which span painting, printmaking, and drawing, amongst other media, offer an artistic interpretation of some salient elements that characterise the human condition and the Faustian ethos.

Through his use of drawing, painting and printmaking, Shirfield invites viewers to contemplate the themes of arrogance, temptation, ambition, and the consequences of our choices.

Curator Roderick Camilleri has meticulously curated a collection of Shirfield’s works that delve into the depths of Faust’s character and the moral dilemmas he faces.

The exhibition is arranged thematically, guiding viewers through various stages of Faust’s journey from the initial themes of mortification and suffering to the playful portrayal of the sacred and profane, to the representation of Faustus’ anti-Dantesque journey leading to an inevitable downfall.

According to the artist, “Faustus is a mythical icon for contemporary society because his narrative externalises the internal conflicts of the human condition. The tale’s exploration of hubris and the eternal struggle between good and evil continues to speak to humanity’s contemporary ethical dilemmas and existential questions.”

The Dirge offers a modern interpretation of a classic narrative, inviting viewers to consider the enduring relevance of Faust’s story in today’s world.

According to the curator Camilleri, “The exhibition can be seen as a subtle commentary that challenges us to examine our current desires and the potential consequences of pursuing self centred gratification and consumerism at any cost”.

The exhibition will be held at Splendid, Strait Street Valletta, and will be open to the public from 2nd November to 29th November.
