Three Things To Check Out During Valletta Film Festival’s Closing Weekend

The Valletta Film Festival comes to an end on Sunday, so this weekend is your last chance to enjoy the outdoor screenings and cultural talks taking place all over Malta’s beautiful capital.

With five days left, here are the three things to look out for during the VFF’s closing weekend.

1. The debut of Arabia

Tonight, the much-anticipated Arabia will be premiering at the Herbert Ganado Gardens at 9pm. The Hollywood Reporter recently described it as “a quiet epic which is both ideal for the current turbulent epoch and timeless, grittily specific in its details but universal in its themes”.

The film, which will also be screening on Friday and Saturday afternoon, tells the story of a young Brazilian boy from an industrial neighbourhood who stumbles upon a factory worker’s notebook.

2. Workshops on anything from film funding to virtual reality

Visitors of VFF can also attend a number of free workshops with topics ranging from financing your films, scripting presentation and film pitching, and a Masterclass on Virtual Reality versus “classic” film mediums.

This week started off with a workshop by David Ruff, the director of Land of Light, on the use of Online Media as a tool to raise social awareness.

The full list of workshops can be found here.

3. The Awards Ceremony, including the Audience Award

Films from all over the world are being screened around Valletta, each aiming to be recognised in the awards ceremony that takes place on Sunday night. On the night, the Best Feature Film and Best Documentary Awards will be awarded.

There’s also an Audience Award up for grabs, the results of which can be followed on a daily basis on Facebook as the votes of the night before are tallied up.

Films are still debuting on a daily basis, so things can change by the end of the festival, but as it currently stands, Insyriated is leading the fray. The film, directed by Philippe Van Leeuw, tells the story of Oum Yazan, a Syrian mother of three who turns her flat into a safe harbour while her city is under siege.

Last weekend, Oscar-nominated film director Agnieszka Holland spoke about Malta and the festival at the end of what she described as a great two-day visit on the island, where she was presenting her latest film SPOOR.

“I was surprised by the beauty and the architectural and cultural richness,” she said. “It’s like the laboratory of Europe.”

The full programme of the Valletta Film Festival can be found here, with ticket information available here. One ticket is €7, and the price for the Closing Ceremony is €10. Be sure to make the most of the remaining few days!
