Taking appreciation for the human senses to a whole new level, Tactile Project is an upcoming exhibition that promises to do just that. Running from the 5th of October until the 2nd of November at the old University in Valletta, the exhibition will feature 12 sculptures, each one made by a different artist. Overseas talent will be also be showcased, with works from five international artists and seven local creatives.

The principles behind this exhibition will rely on the absence of light. Illusions will be created with the sculptors, as attendees will be guided into a dark room deprived of any source of light.

“Visitors will be blindfolded prior to entering the room,” said Jesmond Vassallo, exhibition curator. “That way they will not be able to understand the sculpture by looking at it.”

The artists who are participating in this exhibition were left to choose their medium and themes freely. “I did not tell them to work on something particular, I left all of them free to do whatever they want. However, when I had to choose the works, I took care to have as many material variations as possible,” Vassallo said.

“There’s a lot of different materials being used for this. Some will be made out of bronze, other from wood or glass and some are even a mixture of different materials, it will be a rich experience,” he said.

One of the main aims Vassallo had with this exhibition is to make it accessible for people who are visually impaired. “It’s a very new experience for those who are able to see to understand the exhibits using their hands. It also helps one empathise with those who are visually impaired,” he added.

The participating artists include Jesmond Vassallo, Kunie Fujiyoshi, Omura Shunji, John Vassallo, Noel Galea Bason, Takeshi Yukawa, Paul Scerri, Joseph Chetcuti, Jonathan Galea, Adriano Ciarla, Claire Fontana and Raymond Azzopardi.

Tactile is organised and supported by Valletta 2018 and Valletta Design Cluster, in collaboration with EU JapanFest Japan Committee.

Tactile Project will be open from the 5th of October until the 2nd of November
