Visual Artist Matthew Cassar And Author Lara Calleja Team Up For Spazju Kreattiv Exhibition
Milan-based visual artist Matthew Cassar has teamed up with European-award-winning author Lara Calleja for a new public art exhibition at Spazju Kreattiv’s Space C.
The exhibition will see Cassar produce mixed-media artworks, such as paintings, clothing and installations, with Calleja producing literature pieces simultaneously.
Announcing their exhibition, which is entitled ‘Sheepsbodies’, the two artists said they aim to question the idea of self and questioning authenticity in a world that constantly presents us with endless, fast information and shifting standards.
The title ‘Sheepsbodies’ is inspired by the slang term ‘dogsbody’, which the British Royal Navy originally used to refer to junior officials assigned to do unpleasant tasks.
“This colloquial term is demeaning in nature and also inflicts a sense of servility on the receiving end of the phrase,” they said. “A dog obeys, but a sheep chooses to follow.”
“Therefore, through sheepsbodies we shall explore the same idea of servility, and how this influences our identity, but rather than from an imposed social stratum, such as social class, religion or employment rank, we shall look at it as a personal choice of ‘who to follow and be influenced by’ within the modern social media reality.”
The exhibition will be inaugurated on 7th December and will feature a live performance by musician Michael Azzopardi. It will stay open to the public until 14th January.
