A collective performance focusing on guilt, shame, and failure, titled ‘Walk of Shame’ and led by Charlene Galea, is happening this weekend in Valletta at Malta’s National Museum, MUŻA.

As part of the current residency in Muza Malta, Charlene is working with several individuals around the topic of shame, guilt, and failure using simple movements, writing short stories influenced by magazines or personal stories and how beauty has been instructed to women.

“Discussing the contemporary body as a collective is of great importance within the context of the walls of the National Museum,” Charlene told Lovin Malta.

“The representation of the woman’s body within past works of art in the space has mostly been done by male artists and the women’s pose in the general historical art depictions are mostly presented as gracious, sinners or mothers.”

The collaborators who have met on different days in the residency include dancers, activists, architects, photographers, and painters, as well as others with curiosity about the topics – no matter what they do – their roles have been reversed and expanded to try new stuff out of their limit box.

“The aim is to give power through collective art.”

To end the research and process of this month’s residency, on 13th May, there will be another collective performance event ‘Walk of Shame’ between 5pm and 7pm.

Some of the performance such as ‘Sendikarji’ with Maria Sammut has taken place already in the public space of Valletta, but the research finding will be shown on 13th May.

Charlene would like to thank all the participants who are taking time off their work to be part of this collective and share their energy and creative bodies in the space.

Charlene besides being a photographer and a live performer has been a nude model locally in live drawing classes for a few years and discussing the body as nude, clothed, emotionally, and anatomically – in whichever state the body is – her interest is to make space and give space – to others, to the environment and to those less visible.

And if needed she will even climb billboards on a main street in underwear and pose high above the cars that usually are catcalling when she is walking down the street.

Tag someone that needs to be there tomorrow!
