Cuban artist Tania Bruguera installed a powerful piece of art as part of the Malta Biennale Arts fFstival, shedding light on the reality of migration in the Mediterranean.
The installation involves a large flag of the European Union hanging down a wall. A stuntman called Morgan Chetcuti soon starts edging down the flag with a bottle of yellow spray paint.
Chetcuti then starts to connect the characteristic stars of the flag with what looks to be drawings of barbed wire before reaching the end and writing “The poor treatment of the migrants today will be our dishonour tomorrow”.
Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer even shared a video of this installation onto his Instagram story saying “I’m happy to see our artists with very strong messages for change at the Malta Biennale”.
Tania Bruguera is a leading international artist and activist examining political power structures and their effect on injustice with her politically engaged art practices. The Velázquez Prize, Arnold Bode Prize, Robert Rauschenberg Award and the Herb Alpert Award are among her recognitions.
She holds a Doctor Honoris Causa at the Maryland Institute College of Art and at her alma mater. She has shown at Documenta (2002, 2022), Venice Biennales (2001, 2005, 2009, 2015), Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, Tate Modern, MMK and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana. She is a Senior Lecturer at Harvard University and the founding director of INSTAR.
