Two talented Turkish artists, who also happen to be married, created a stunning snow sculpture of the Maltese Wall Lizard while representing the island at a festival in Finland.

“The reason for this choice is that I have been living in Malta for about seven years now, and it has become a part of me. Despite the challenges of migration, such as longing for one’s homeland and feelings of not belonging, creating something about Malta has been a continuation of the process of strengthening my sense of belonging here,” Serhat Gür told Lovin Malta, speaking of the piece constructed by him and his wife – Adrianna Oramus Gür.

During his time in Malta, Serhat has contributed to several exhibitions and installations around the island, you may be familiar with his work on the jellyfish installation on South Street in Valletta.

His most recent artistic venture, however, involved the creation of a Maltese wall lizard constructed completely out of snow and ice at the Arctic Art Festival in Rovaniemi which adopted the theme Connecting with Nature.

“In Malta, you can find harmless lizards almost everywhere. They have adapted to living alongside humans, making their homes in small rocky crevices and the gaps between bricks in buildings, becoming an inseparable part of our streets.”

“Sometimes, we don’t even notice them while walking on the streets or drinking coffee on our balconies; they are always with us. My choice reflects not only the essence of Malta’s wildlife but also symbolises the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.”

Serhat has previously created sculptures using materials like marble, metal, wood, and clay, but working with snow was a first. Serhat created the design and application, while he and Adrianna worked together to build the sculpture.

“We worked on a snow block measuring three metres by three metres, and it was a lot of fun. Being our first experience, we faced some challenges at the beginning, but we managed to complete the sculpture in four days. While sculpting, we used electric saws and metal chisels. Additionally, creating a sculpture of the Maltese wall lizard, an animal from a warm climate, in the Arctic created an interesting contrast.”

Moreover, Serhat explained how enriching it was to work with his wife, not only is she “talented in every aspect of art” but that in general it was an extremely fun experience to share.

“It was as much fun to complete this sculpture with her as it is to travel.”

That doesn’t mean that the experience came without challenges, but luckily, they were able to push each other through it and complete this spectacular work of art.

“As someone who has been living in Malta for 7 years and has gotten used to the warm weather, motivating each other to work 10 hours a day in temperature dropping down to -32 Celsius degrees was quite an experience. We technically helped each other and worked in harmony, and as a result, we placed a Maltese Lizard on the arctic circle.”

Meanwhile, Adrianna also spoke to the newsroom about her experience:

“Collaborating with my husband on this project and witnessing his genuine passion was deeply satisfying. It was my first time working on a large-scale sculpture and in snowy conditions. Despite the challenges, we managed to work together effectively. Along the way, we met other artists and enjoyed the beauty of Finnish nature. Overall, it was a great experience.”
