A new American film all about the journey of St. Paul and his friend Luke has just been released worldwide. Paul, Apostle of Christ is a biblical drama film written and directed by Andrew Hyatt, and was shot in Malta.

The film stars James Faulker as Paul, whom you might recognise as Randall Tarly from Game of Thrones, as well as Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, portraying Luke.

During their time here, the actors had nothing but praise for the island, and Malta’s religious dedication.

Malta is fantastic – Valletta is a beautiful city has one of the most beautiful harbours in the world – just extraordinary. The old heart of Malta, the fortifications are amazing, extraordinary, timeless. And the general landscape and the rock, lends itself to being the holy land – it’s a perfect topography,” said James Faulkner.

“Malta is maybe the most unique place I ever shot at,” said David Zelon, the producer. “There are a half a dozen to a dozen forts that have been built over the last five centuries that are magnificent in their architecture and their visual appeal. Malta has an amazing film community here and so we were able to draw on local talent both for acting and crew base that you don’t normally find in a small country like this,” said producer David Zelon.

The film tells the story of Paul, who was known as a ruthless persecutor of Christians, only to convert to the faith. The plot focuses on him becoming a pivotal figure in the formation of the early church before eventually being executed by Emperor Nero in Rome.

Malta has always attracted Biblical films, or films set in the Roman era. This is also the second Sony film to be filmed in Malta, with the first being Risen, in 2014.

It was shot over 23 days in September, 2017. 200 workers were needed on set, and 25 actors, including Maltese actors like Manuel Cauchi and Chris Dingli, were involved in the filming, alongside 300 extras.

Principal photography began in September 2017 in Malta. The film was released on March 23, 2018, by Sony Pictures.

The film had a total budget of €5,243,091, and 33% of the post-production was done in Malta.
