Young Maltese Dance Couple Win Big Overseas, Battling It Out Against Competitors Nearly Double Their Age
Two young Maltese dancers impressed the crowd at the Italian Open Dance Championships yesterday, bringing home the gold in their categories and going on to do very well against much older competitors.
Skander Friggieri and Martina Camilleri, who are nine and 10 years old, won both the Under 11 and Under 12 Open Latin categories during last night’s competitions. However, their dance studio decided to also enrol them into the higher age categories, and the two young dancers definitely didn’t disappoint.
“Normally, not many couples compete in higher age categories than their own,” their instructor and manager Laurence from Strictly 360 Dance Studios told Lovin Malta. “And yet, they did extremely well.”
In fact, Skander and Martina went on to place third in the Under 14 category and sixth in the Under 16s… a category with dancers nearly double their age! “At only nine years old, they managed to make every single final,” Laurence proudly announced on Facebook.
The judging panel for the Italian Open Championships’ Liberty Dance Cup featured a panel of 11 International Judges, and each competition consisted of five Latin dances.
Couples competed for the most marks in each dance, and it’s primarily this that determined whether they’d make it through to the next round.
Skander and Martina have been dancing together for only nine months, but they’ve already started gaining some big results abroad. The future is definitely bright for these young dancers!
