Renowned photographer Daniel Cilia has called for Austin Camilleri’s famous Żieme monument to eventually be brought back to its original location outside Parliament.

The three-legged horse monument is currently standing in Place Broglie, Strasbourg as part of the cultural programme for Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe.

Praising the monument, Cilia said it should eventually be returned to Valletta, where it had stood for some time back in 2014.

“In Strasbourg today, all eyes are drawn to Austin Camilleri’s Żieme, proudly poised in Broglie Square before the majestic Opéra National du Rhin,” he said.

“Meanwhile, in Malta, we are left with garish publicity cubes greeting visitors at the entrance to our splendid capital, Valletta.”

“Żieme once graced this very place – let him stand here once more. Why should he wander through Europe’s grand cities, when his true home is here? Bring Żiemel back to where he belongs!”

Camilleri’s monument is meant as a reflection on the impermanence of power, symbolised by the horse’s missing leg. It will remain on display in Strasbourg until 14th November.

Should Żieme be brought back to Valletta eventually?
