Concerns over Pope Francis’ recent ill health have sparked intense speculation about his eventual successor.

According to Vatican experts speaking to Times of Malta, Malta’s own Cardinal Mario Grech is emerging as a leading candidate for the papacy.

Dutch Vatican correspondent Hendro Munsterman told Times of Malta, “He’s definitely among the top five.”

Munsterman praised Grech’s approachable and straightforward nature, comparing him favourably to Pope Francis.

Vatican correspondent Christopher White echoed these sentiments, emphasising Grech’s global reputation and the extensive network he’s built through his work within the Church.

At just 68, Cardinal Grech has played a key role in advancing Pope Francis’s vision for a more inclusive and participatory Church, notably through his leadership as general secretary of the synod of bishops.

However, not everyone is convinced. Some critics have questioned whether Grech’s personality is dynamic enough for the role.
