From Deċeduti To Simpatiċi, These Are The Top 5 Most Iconic Maltese TV Couples

It’s Valentine’s day! And most single people will be at home, on their couch, watching fictional couples – living vicariously through them, whilst gobbling down three packets of Twistees.

Since most of us grew up in a television generation, we’ve gotten used to falling fast and hard for TV couples, including Maltese ones.

Nothing felt better than spending your Thursday night watching the hilarious relationship of Ramon and Rosie, in Deċeduti, unfold, or watching the character of Bettina fall in love with the handsome Davide Tucci in L-Għarusa.

Here are Malta’s top TV couples, ranked from best to worst:

1. Rosie and Ramon, from Deċeduti

I had to place this iconic duo at the number one spot – these two are the epitome of every Maltese couple. Although their dynamic is exaggerated for comedic purposes, Rosie’s assertiveness and her ‘wearing the pants’ in the relationship, coupled with Ramon’s self-pity, make it hard to deny them the top place.

2. Benjamin and Donna Amalia, also from Deċeduti

Yes… another Deċeduti couple – these two are the protagonist couple of the show, who came so close to making it to the number one spot. Benjamin Sultana jumps into a fire after seeing a woman in a window and attempts to save her.

After he ‘wakes up’, he realises that he’s died and is now a ghost, and the woman, Donna Amalia, is also a ghost. They fall in love. Isn’t that the most romantic thing you’ve ever heard of? They truly are the Maltese version of Romeo and Juliet…

3. Joe and Dora, from Simpatiċi

Honestly, mum and dad! These two were not only the parental figures of the show, but it feels like they raised an entire Maltese generation.

Simpatiċi is described as a ”situation comedy with lots of comedy situations” and these two perfectly portray the happiness, accomplishments, humour AND problems that arise from both raising a family and having a job in modern society.

4. Diego and Bettina, from L-Għarusa

This TV series has everything you could ever want in a show – a murder, a murder mystery, and a love story between the bride who got murdered and Diego, the guy who she fell in love with but not the one who she was going to marry.

Drama, drama, and more drama  – just how the Maltese like it. I don’t think you need any more convincing that these two deserve the fourth spot.

5. Lydia and Mario, from Strada Stretta

Similar to L-Għarusa, Lydia is trapped in an engagement with someone she doesn’t want to be with, so she decides to run away from home to be with her lover, a simple man. Lydia gives up a whole life of luxury for love.

Apart from it being a classic love story, the series takes viewers to the social and historical realities of 1957, and shows how the famous Valletta street was back in its heyday – infiltrated with prostitution and murder.

These fictional couples interactions are great, and I believe they can teach us about our own relationships.

Even though real life will never compare to these series, you may watch a couple, and find out what qualities you’re looking for in a partner, or you’re not looking for.
