‘I Started Crying Both Tears Of Happiness And Sadness’: Christabelle Borg Opens Up About The Stress Of Long-Distance Marriage

Local singer Christabelle Borg has shared an intimate look at her life with husband Jordan in a lengthy Instagram post uploaded earlier today. Excited by the end-of-season reunion, Christabelle got deep about the ups and downs of living in a long distance marriage.

The young couple, who tied the knot last September, have lived hundreds of kilometres apart after Jordan was given the opportunity to play waterpolo professionally in Italy’s top league. “[When he was offered the job] I started crying both tears of happiness and sadness too” she writes.

But distance didn’t deter their love, and Christabelle took every chance she’d get to visit “Rome every fortnight, for just 36 hours”.

While lucky to be able to visit so often, the Taboo singer admits she “cried in bed” because of their situation and often picked fights that wouldn’t have been issues if they were in the same country

Between keeping their relationship strong and her usual working life, she often ended up sleeping just three hours a day.

The timing of everything didn’t help either, as the opportunity arose just days from their big ceremony.

“He left a week before the wedding, came back down a day before it and then left again two hours after our wedding reception ended,” Christabelle wrote. “I woke up the next morning as a married woman without my husband.”

“It has always been Jordan’s dream to pursue a full-time career in waterpolo but his professional career always took precedence. A few months before our wedding Jordan was at the European Championships in Barcelona when he called to tell me that he had been offered a professional contract with AS Roma playing in A1 Italy, one of the best leagues in the world, if not the best. At that moment I started crying both tears of happiness and tears of sadness too, thinking how would our marriage survive living apart. My job didn’t allow me to pack my bags and leave. We made a decision together that he would put his medical career on hold for a year to pursue one of his lifetime dreams. He left a week before the wedding, came back down a day before and left again 2 hours after our wedding reception ended. I woke up the next morning as a married woman without my husband. I decided to visit as often as I could and so I made my way to Rome every fortnight for 36 hours on Saturday morning to watch his team play and back to Malta on Sunday night. I have to admit, it wasn’t easy to go through the struggles of life on a daily basis all on my own and most nights I got less than 3 hours of sleep. Life had become more and more difficult and every day I cried in bed and occasionally argued with my husband because I was all alone. I am definitely not proud of these moments because I am extremely supportive of what he does and in those moments it obviously didn’t seem that way. We would argue and make up after a few minutes. It got a bit easier at times and became more difficult in others. Jordan is now back in Malta after an extremely successful season with AS Roma and our love has survived this long distance marriage. As Jordan always says as long as we have each other we’ll weather any storm. I will support my husband forever till God gives me the energy and the courage to do so, as does he.”
