‘I’ve Never Seen Anything Like This’: Pedro Pascal Says Malta Set Was Like Game Of Thrones ‘Multiplied In A Big Way’

As the world braces for the first trailer of Gladiator 2, Malta has had another awesome shout-out, this time courtesy of Hollywood star Pedro Pascal.

Last week, the cast of the Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated sequel to his 2000 Oscar-winner was interviewed by Vanity Fair as part of an in-depth First Look article... and beyond revelations on their personal backstories and the blockbuster’s massive production effort, the tiny island which played host to most of the filming got its own awesome mention.

“It was like taking Game of Thrones and multiplying the size in a big way,” Pascal – who had played the role of the Red Viper in the monumental HBO series but also starred in hit series like Narcos, The Last Of Us and The Mandalorian – said of the sprawling sets which included a massive arena built by the shore of Fort Ricasoli.

“I’ve been on such big sets and I have never seen anything like this,” Pascal continued.
Of course, interestingly enough, Game of Thrones is yet another thing Pascal and Malta have in common, with some of the earliest episodes and iconic scenes of the eight-season spectacle being filmed right here.

The 49-year-old Chilean-American actor (who seems to have really enjoyed his time in Malta) is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Gladiator II’s superstar line-up, which also stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn… and of course Ridley Scott in the directing chair.
The highly-anticipated film has dominated the spotlight and gossip spheres far beyond our shores, but back in Malta, it also found itself at the heart of a controversial revelation, when it was found that the Maltese government was prepared to spend €46.7 million of taxpayer money to essentially fund its development.

Meanwhile, with the first images from Gladiator II published last week, the official poster shared overnight and the first trailer set to be unveiled later today, things are properly heating up for the epic’s arrival onto the big screen on 22nd November.
