Malta’s Comeback Of The Week Goes To This Comment On The Salott
It all started innocently enough with a post on the popular Facebook forum The Salott.
This time, it was radio host and model Valentina Rossix who asked the 40K members of the group to share the Maltese words they hated the most, calling it the “topic of the day”. In less than 24 hours, the post gathered upwards of 600 comments, and while most people were happy to comply, others took the post as the perfect opportunity to throw some shade Rossi’s way.
“Who are you to dictate the topic of the day?” one user said, instantly starting off with zero chill. The comment went on to say that if she was discussing “etymological related themes”, the least she could do was “ask in its appropriate language”, Maltese. That might’ve been where the whole thread would’ve ended, but it was only getting started. And it all kicked off with Rossi clapping back with all the shade in the world.
“I’m wondering cause I looked up etymology and apparently it refers to the origin of a word and the historical development of its meaning but what I’m asking is simply which Maltese words do people hate the most,” Valentina said. “So can you kindly rephrase your smart ass comment so that it makes you look smart, and not just an ass?” She even finished her comment off by throwing his “Geez!” right back at him.
Again, that might’ve been where things ended, but this is Malta, and people love having the last word in. The original commenter threw in a blonde reference in there (of course), and he only got another comeback thrown his way… this time by other users.
Considering past posts on The Salott, the whole thing could’ve ended way worse (we’re frankly surprised it didn’t escalate to all out race warfare), but it seems like the hilarious comebacks were mostly thrown and received without actual offence being given or taken.
After all, Valentina’s friends and colleagues also chimed in… and they didn’t all comment the way you’d expect them to. One person posted a GIF of Rossi, with the words “I GOT OWNED ON THE SALOTT” plastered all over.
Back to the original post, hundreds of people chimed in with their own pet peeves when it comes to Maltese words, with anything from the infamous “xikapsowvers” to the hilarious “Pugu” (the way most people destroy ‘Peugeot’).
Valentina mentioned some of them on her radio show with Nate yesterday, but of all the hundreds of comments on the post, we know which ones are getting the Comebacks of the Week Award.
