2023 was the year of major ups, and extreme downs; incredible achievements, and devastating losses, which is normal considering there were 365 days to both fuck up and succeed.

But, since this is the season to be jolly, we’ve decided to focus on the positives (just for a short while) and ask some of Malta’s most known and most important personalities what their biggest achievements were in this tumultuous year.

So without further ado, these are their greatest achievements:

1. Bernard Grech

“I feel that the most notable achievement was that, together with society as a whole, we managed to convince Robert Abela to establish a public inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia, even after he had originally voted against the PN motion on this matter.”

2. Byron Camilleri

“Deploying overseas rescue and humanitarian missions for the first time ever. The Civil Protection Department deployed search and rescue efforts in Turkey in February.”

“They were again assisting the Greek authorities in containing wildfires that ravished the countryside in July, and last September, they were joined by the Armed Forces of Malta in a search and rescue mission in Derna, Libya, which was flooded after two dams collapsed due to heavy rains.”

3. Roberta Metsola

“Helping Ukraine and Moldova open accession negotiations with the European Union.”

4. Peppi Azzopardi

“I started inviting the few who attack me aggressively on social media to meet. I learned that the aggressive ones on Facebook are the best when you meet them.”

5. Joseph Muscat

“Taking a full set of cancer-related tests, something I had been subconsciously postponing for years. I did them thanks to the insistence of my wife.”

6. Aaron Farrugia

“My biggest achievement: seeing my eldest daughter start secondary school and my youngest start primary school this September. Both were eager to start a new chapter in their own respective lives, learn new subjects, and make new friends. It felt like my biggest achievement by far.”

7. James Ryder

“The Late Night Show.”

8. Ian Borg

“Being appointed Chairman of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe for 2024.”

9. Owen Bonnici

“Getting Malta’s festa to be officially recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Kudos to the incredible volunteers who bring festas to life across the islands!”

10. Miriam Dalli

“Bringing together nine EU energy ministers from the Mediterranean region for the Med9 meeting and together, reaching a historic agreement, committing to making the Mediterranean region a green energy hub.”

“This agreement was reached at the same time that the EU was discussing the challenges regarding the international situation, affecting oil prices and the supply provision to the EU member states.”

11. Chris Fearne

“Being appointed President of the World Health Assembly.”

12. Robert Abela

“All achievements were the result of one team working together as a nation; Team Malta with social partners, families, and businesses. Despite international challenges, we continued supporting families with stable energy prices, reached a historic agreement on an increase in the national minimum wage, and sustained robust economic growth that helped us continue supporting people, together with Malta’s organisation of the small nations games with the best result ever gives me great satisfaction.”
