Watch: Marisa Abela Wins Prestigious BAFTA For Her Role In Hit BBC TV Series ‘Industry’

She’s only gone and done it Marisa Abela has won a BAFTA, the most coveted prize in British TV. And she only went and did it for Best Leading Actress!
Last night, the star-studded night at London’s Royal Festival Hall saw a number of celebrities being celebrated, but one name shone brightly above the rest for her portrayal of Yasmin in BBC and HBO’s Industry.
Definitely helped by the incredible script and an intense turn in the third series for her character, Abela managed to blow everyone away in the high-octane banker drama, beating out the likes of Anna Maxwell Martin (from true-crime drama Until I Kill You), Monica Dolan (from Mr Bates vs the Post Office), Billie Piper (Scoop), Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing) and Sharon D Clarked (Mr Loverman).

Thanking the series’ writers Konrad Kay and Mickey Down, the 28-year-old actress opened up about the character of Yasmin quite literally “changed my life”, reflecting on how the script had her go from “carrying salads” into the office to evolving into one of the most beloved characters on the show. “You wrote with such excitement and ferociousness, and it allowed me to go for it, and I thank you so, so much for that,” she said.
While many may know Abela from her intensive transformation into legendary British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse in the 2024 biopic Back to Black, Abela had already been a force to be reckoned with on the silver screen, and last night’s BAFTA is an incredible nod to her already-impressive legacy
Born to a father of Maltese and Libyan descent and with a mother of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors who immigrated from Poland and Russia, Abela attended Roedean School and took drama classes with the Theatre Workshop. She’s already been celebrated for her successes multiple times before, both in Malta and well beyond, but last night showed everyone just how much people need to remember that name!
Congratulations Marisa!
