Watch: ‘This Isn’t The 1800s’ – Maltese Presenter Defends Gino D’Acampo From UK Media Backlash

Maltese radio presenter Nicole Ellul has called out British media houses for whipping up a storm over comments passed by Italian celebrity chef Gino d’Acampo on her show.
In a recent interview on her Vibe FM show, Nicole said that she regularly diets and Gino quipped that “only dogs like bones”.
“A real man, he wants the meat, you know, the things to grab. Don’t get too skinny, otherwise it’s like, no.”
He also commented: “I’m going to tell you a secret, Italian food is like Italian men, minimum effort, maximum satisfaction.”
The interview caught the attention of some British media houses, with The Sun describing his comments as “smutty” and “lewd” and The Mirror calling them “crass” and “sexualised”.
However, Nicole said that it was all just playful banter that is being “blown out of proportion”.
“What was mentioned during the radio show was just playful banter and harmless fun,” she said.
“I can’t understand why so much sensationalism was triggered by all of it.”
“I just want to tell our listeners to keep an open mind and to not interpret what was said in a negative way.”
“There was no intention to harm anyone, and it was all playful banter. We’re living in 2025, not the 1800s.”
Gino has headlined several TV cooking shows, including ‘Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip’ with Gordon Ramsay and Fred Sireix.
He is set to open his first international restaurant, Luciano by Gino D’Acampo, at Mercury Towers next month.
