David George from Qormi, whose life was turned upside down by a tragic accident just five months before he was due to get married, was given a heartwarming surprise that has left his family in tears of joy.

A resident at Dar Bjorn, is known for one thing above all else: his absolute, die-hard love for the feast of St. George in his hometown of Qormi.

His father, Frans, recalls how David’s passion started from a young age. “When he was two, he started to love the feasts. He would get dressed up and his mother was always teaching him the hymn of St. George,” he shared. This wasn’t just a phase; for David, the festa was everything. He would book a week off work for it, and his Holy Week preparations started from Wednesday as he helped out with the church’s traditional displays.

He was a man dedicated to his community, teaching Christmas sermons and helping with the 9am mass for children on Sundays.

But just as he was preparing for the happiest day of his life, tragedy struck. David and his fiancée were cleaning their future home when an accident left him with severe head injuries. He spent the next nine months in a coma.

“It was a Saturday, I was asleep,” Frans recalled. “They told me, ‘Come on, David’s been hurt’. They were rushing me… I went to the hospital and as soon as I saw him, I burst into tears.”

Life changed forever. But a new chapter began when David found a second home at Dar Bjorn, a place that has brought immense peace to his family. “I felt a huge joy, firstly for him and for me too, because my strength is gone and I can’t push him in his wheelchair anymore. Now that the feasts are here, he’s close to us and he’s so happy,” Frans said.

And that happiness reached a whole new level recently.

Knowing his passion, the St. George’s Band Club (Għaqda Mużikali San Ġorġ Martri) decided to pay him a visit. The band marched right into Dar Bjorn and filled the hall with the sounds of the anthems David loves so much.

The surprise was overwhelming. “It was a huge surprise for him to see the hall fill up with the band,” Frans said, admitting his own emotions got the better of him. “Even I was so happy that I started crying. I never imagined they would come.”

Despite his condition, David’s spirit shone through as he began to sing the hymn of St. George along with them.

It’s moments like these that show the incredible impact of Dar Bjorn. David’s story is a powerful reminder of why the upcoming fundraising marathon is so critical.
