Lydia Abela Brings Back ‘Rigal Bi Mħabba’ For Sixth Year

The Prime Minister’s wife, Lydia Abela, launched the sixth edition of Rigal bi Mħabba in Castille Square yesterday evening.

Rigal bi Mħabba is an initiative supporting vulnerable children to ensure they, too, receive gifts inspired by the love of the Maltese and Gozitan people during the Christmas season.

The launch took place in the presence of the choir La Voix Harmonies, which year after year creates a song for this initiative, sending a powerful message of hope and solidarity.

Abela explained that this initiative was born from a dream she shared with her daughter Giorgia-Mae. Today, that dream has grown into a movement involving thousands of people who come together to bring joy to the children most at risk in our society. She emphasised that while many families enjoy an abundant Christmas, others face hardship or live in difficult circumstances.

“Our wish is simple but meaningful: that every boy and girl has a gift under the Christmas tree and that no child feels forgotten,” Abela stated.

She added that gifts can be left under the Christmas tree in Castille Square between 12th and 19th December. She also announced that from 15th to 24th December, the Square will be transformed into a Christmas Village featuring family activities, traditional Christmas food and drinks, and local crafts.

The closing of Rigal bi Mħabba will take place on 19th December, with a day full of activities, including a musical performance by local talent and a concert by the Armed Forces of Malta Band.

Abela also recognised the important role of local councils and schools, which have once again contributed this year. She highlighted her personal experience visiting Ġużeppina Deguara Primary School, where children presented gifts they had prepared themselves with their teachers.

During the launch, Abela also announced the return of Rigal bi Mħabba b’Differenza, an initiative in support of animals, which she founded together with Jake Vella. This year, the initiative will also be extended to Gozo.

She concluded by thanking the Ministry for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, as well as all the disciplined corps involved in organising and distributing the gifts.
