WATCH: Maltese Mum Faces Her Biggest Fear To Bring Pure Joy To Her Son At DAR Bjorn

What would you do for your child? For one Maltese mother, it meant coming face-to-face with her absolute biggest fear: snakes. And it was all for her 20-year-old son, Matthia, an animal lover with a heart of gold living at DAR Bjorn.
In a recent video by Marelli, viewers were given a front-row seat to one of the most wholesome, and slightly terrifying, surprises imaginable.
Matthia, described by his mum Marvy as a mischievous character who “loves all animals,” was treated to a special visit by Kaya, who brought along some slithery friends. As the snakes were brought out, Matthia’s face lit up with pure, unadulterated joy. He couldn’t wait to have them around him, his lifelong fascination playing out in real-time.
“I’ve loved them since I was small, all animals fascinate me,” Matthia beamed.
His mother, Marvy, on the other hand… well, her reaction was a little different. She could be seen physically recoiling, admitting that it took “a lot of courage” just to be in the same room. But seeing the happiness on her son’s face made every heart-pounding second worth it.
But this story is about so much more than a heartwarming surprise. It’s a story about a family’s journey and the life-changing support they found at DAR Bjorn.
Marvy bravely opened up about the struggles she faced before Matthia became a resident.
“Bjorn saved me, and he saved Matthia,” she said emotionally. “My son’s brother passed away, and he was left alone. I couldn’t cope anymore. I have three slip discs in my back… I was running out of carers. I couldn’t lift him.”
The relief and gratitude in her voice are palpable when she speaks about the moment they were welcomed into the DAR Bjorn family.
“When Matthia entered DAR Bjorn, I was so excited, it was like I had won the lottery,” she explained. “We were stunned. Everything Bjorn promised was delivered to the smallest detail. I don’t have the words to thank him.”
Today, Matthia is thriving in a room fully equipped for his needs, surrounded by a team that feels like family. And despite his condition preventing him from keeping pets himself, moments like these, where his passion for animals can be celebrated, mean the world.
Marvy describes her son as having a “heart of gold, very sensitive, caring, and a joker,” and this video proves it. It’s a beautiful testament to a mother’s love, a son’s passion, and the incredible work that allows families to find joy and peace in the most challenging of circumstances.
