Watch: This DAR Bjorn Resident Lost His Memory In An Accident But Never Forgot How To Play Chess

When Stephen was just 21 years old, his life changed in an instant. A serious accident left him with brain damage and a memory so fragile that he could barely remember anything from his past.
But there was one thing that stayed with him: his love for chess.
Despite losing so many precious memories, Stephen never forgot how to play the game. It is one of the few constants in his life, a connection to who he was before the accident.
Thanks to the unwavering care of his parents and family, Stephen recovered significantly, even if his memory never fully returned. Today, he lives at DAR Bjorn, Malta’s neurological home that gives residents like him a safe, dignified and loving environment.
“There is good food, lots of activities and a beautiful room,” Stephen says. “When I first heard I was moving here, I was scared. I imagined a place where I would not be able to move or go out. But it is nothing like that. This is a real home.”
Stephen spends hours playing chess against his computer because there is no one else at DAR Bjorn who can challenge him. But recently, Maria Formosa, who adores his mischievous sense of humour, decided to surprise him.
She invited Jack Mizzi, Malta’s chess champion, to visit and play a few games with Stephen. Jack immediately agreed, and to everyone’s surprise, it turned out that Stephen and Jack had played together around nine years ago, though Stephen sadly has no memory of it.
For Stephen, the visit was a dream come true.
Stephen’s story is one of resilience, joy, and the small victories that matter most.
He has one simple message for everyone: “Why wouldn’t you help someone in need? Be generous, because one day it could be you or someone you love who needs help.”
DAR Bjorn continues to provide life-changing care for people like Stephen, but it can only do so with the support of the public.
On 31st August, Malta will come together for the “Miegħek Jien” Telethon, live entertainment on all local TV channels and raising funds to build the third neurological home in Malta. Stephen hopes you will join him in making it possible.
