Over 400 scouts and guides aged 11 to 16 marched to Ghajn Tuffieha last weekend to pitch their tents and light campfires in the spirit of embracing primordial companionship in the outdoors.

The event was named “Stronger Together”, as the organisers from both the Scout Association of Malta and the Malta Girl Guides joined together for the first time in the organisations’ histories, with the aim of strengthening relationships between fellow young guides and scouts, and of course – the outdoors.

To further emphasise the weekend’s intended message, Peter Paul Galea of Tribali opened the event with a drumming workshop to teach Malta’s young scouts and guides the primeval community cohesiveness that can be found through ancient instruments, as well as ways to make good use of recyclable material, and an outlet to explore creativity. TV personality Paulette Gafa also opened the ceremony, drawing further attention to the event.

Throughout the weekend, the young scouts and guides took part in a Greek mythology themed treasure hunt throughout the streets of Valletta, as well as raft building and snorkelling down at Ghadira Bay.

All involved were also free to choose from various workshops where they could learn various survival skills, cooking skills, fire building, and events which provided further engagement with the environment.

At night, a glow in the dark party was held where the weekend’s main objective of connecting Malta’s young scouts and guides with one another -proved to be a huge success.

The weekend’s success has allowed organisers to host the first Mediterranean Jamboree in August of next year, where scouts and guides from all over the world will be attending.

Malta’s outdoor youth may have just put Malta on the map as a new world class camping destination.
