Birkirkara School Kicks Off Awesome Initiative On Their First Day Back

Schools all over Malta went back to business as usual yesterday morning, but one teacher made sure her school started with a bang. Catherine Mercieca from St. Theresa College in Birkirkara shared a photo of her school’s new recycling initiative, urging students to return any bought bottles of water.

A handwritten sign which appeared at the school bar on Monday explained how, for every returned water bottle, the students would be given 10c back. “I didnt keep any statistics today but I intend to start doing so,” Catherine said. “I would say that roughly 75% of the bottles were returned.”

“We’ll be only selling bottles till water fountains (with filters) are installed and reusable water dispensers are bought,” Catherine continued.

“I’ve been in this school for 20 years and the school boards know I always promote environmental projects,” Catherine said. “My headmaster and assistant heads are all for it, rarely find any opposition. When they oppose, it’s because there’s a valid reason for it. Another teacher takes care of Ekoskola which is an international organisation which promotes environmental education in schools.”

“I will focus on my school for now and hopefully engage our parents and the community later on,” the teacher said of this latest initiative. “I have loads of ideas in mind and it’s a lot of work and as teachers we are already overloaded with our own workload. All these projects are over and above, but I can’t turn a blind eye but have to be realistic!”

The government school teacher’s post got over 120 positive reactions on her post in less than a day, with people in the Malta Clean Up Facebook group (which she forms a part of) congratulating her on this new initiative.
