Thousands of people have petitioned Malta’s health authorities to close the island’s schools and universty amidst growing Coronavirus fears and a total of seven confirmed cases in the country.

At the time of writing, the petition had 10,783 signatures, with new people flooding in every couple of seconds.

“This lack of action can lead to the spread of the virus and cause thousands to become sick,” the petition declares. “The local hospitals are not equipped enough to hold such big numbers.”

“We need to learn from other countries’ mistakes and not leave things until it is too late,” the statement finishes. “As citizens of Malta, we have the right to demand actions that would protect our nation. We have a right to be heard and feel safe.”
