‘Complexities Of Western Society’: New Show ‘Il-Giddieb Għomru Twil’ Takes On Maltese Culture
Upcoming production ‘Il-Giddieb Għomru Twil’ twists the original story of Pinocchio to address the trials and tribulations of life as a young Maltese person.
It follows the story of ‘il-giddieb’ as he wrestles with his conscience, also shedding light on how much people are willing to screw each other over to get to the top.
”It reflects the country we live in, our society, and most of all, us… I do see it as a bit of a piss-take (excuse me for being blunt) on our system,” lead actor, Jamie Cardona, said.
Penned by Anton Saliba and directed by Jean-Marc Cafá, the performance will mark Studio 18‘s 10-year anniversary, and will premier on 17th, 18th and 19th March at the Spazju Kreattiv Theatre, in Valletta.
The hour-long performance is not one to miss – with a stellar cast, consisting of Jamie Cardona, Sean Borg, Rebecca Camilleri, Benjamin Abela, and Nadine Farrugia.
”To be frank, it all stems from our youth; we spent a long period of time discovering what young people thought and felt… Pinocchio just happened to be the right vehicle. Giddieb owes its authenticity and its mold to these young people,” director Jean-Marc Cafá stated in a press release.
Cafá is the creative director at Studio 18, and has directed other plays such as Ma Kuragg and Xilallu (both in collaboration with Teatru Malta).
”It is truly an honour and great fun to be sharing the rehearsal space with such a young and talented cast. Thanks to this I feel lucky to be learning through every rehearsal. I like working with the director, Jean Marc Cafá, since he pushes me to the limit and beyond. Giddieb is a learning process for me as well,” Cardona said.
The adapted story will be driven by whimsical text, song, and play – ”whereas the storyline is closer to the original tale than the Disney version, it still deviates to echo the complexities of Western society in 2023,” Cafá explains.
