A police officer who helped get a pregnant couple stuck in Mosta traffic early this morning to hospital has opened up about his amazing experience.

Daniel Debattista was expecting a normal day of work when he woke up early this morning. By 6am he was out in the streets – and that’s when he heard someone trying to get his attention.

“I was just going for an extra duty when I heard a horn honking,” Daniel told Lovin Malta.

“When I stopped,” he continued, “the driver of the vehicle asked if I’m a police officer and I replied ‘yes’, with him telling me to help him since his partner was in labour. I didn’t know what to do since I was on my 125cc scooter, so I immediately called the depot and told them what I encountered and that I needed traffic police assistance – but as you might know, traffic police in the morning are always on points managing traffic.”

Faced with a time-sensitive problem that needed addressing, Daniel took matters into his own hands

“The best option was to advance towards Mater Dei in a responsible manner until we meet the traffic police,” he explained.

“I started driving towards the hospital holding the service radio with my left hand whilst giving indications to the control room of how things were going. Fortunately, drivers cooperated and we managed to arrive next to the old Vodafone outlet in Birkirkara where we met with the traffic police. 45 minutes later, I found out she had delivered a healthy baby girl,” he beamed.

As many social media users praise the police officer for his work, Daniel is just grateful to have been of service to the parents.

“First of all, it is very rewarding!” he said. “This is the best thing that could happen to a police officer. To experience something rewarding like this… not by material things but by something satisfactory. All I did was my job. But to feel appreciated is the best thing that could happen to any person.”
