Malta’s ‘Men Against Violence’ To Discuss Gender Equality

Men Against Violence, a group aimed at getting men and boys of all ages to stand up to all forms of violence, will be hosting a talk about the question “Is gender equality good for men?”

They’ll be teaming up with Electronic Music Malta to create a unique event that covers both sensitive social issues as well as awesome electronic music: Combdnation.

MAV want to raise awareness on all types of violence, be it domestic violence, dating violence, sexual abuse, harassment, stalking or rape. In 2017, with gender issues being such a hot topic, the goal is to have an open discussion about gender equality – and have a great night as well, and that’s where EMM and the idea for Combdnation came in.

Traditional ideas on masculinity are in the state of flux. What does it mean to be a man in the time when gender equality is the topic of the day? Is gender equality good for men and, as men, what’s in it for us?

Men Against Violence

James Buhagiar, part of Men Against Violence, explained the idea behind the event, and why they teamed up with EMM on it:

“The idea is to create a concept where two or more different NGOs, organisations, or even the private sector, come together to combine their forces to present something to the people. Sometimes it is really hard to reach out to new audiences, and get yourself and the work you are doing known. Combining these two different entities together, while being hosted at Badass Burgers, will expose different people to get to know and enjoy the benefits reaping from the work of both entities.”

EMM will be starting the night off with style, before the talk and discussion from MAV. After the talks, expect Deep House and Techno by the very fine DJs Owen Jay, Ed Blank and Geoffrey.

This is planned as the first of a series, with the hope that more organisations will want to get involved. The event is free and supported by any donations.
