‘Miracles Do Happen’: Mosta Barman Whose Laptop Was Stolen Manages To ‘Reconstruct’ Entire Thesis In Five Weeks

A Maltese student whose plea to find his stolen laptop (and the thesis he had saved on it) went national has just revealed that, in five weeks, he managed to rewrite his thesis and submit it on time.

“Miracles do happen,” Leon Farrugia wrote this afternoon. “Although the laptop was never recovered, I remained determined to persevere. Over the past five weeks, I have remarkably managed to reconstruct nearly my entire dissertation in time for submission, thanks to a four-week extension. Despite the setbacks, the commitment to achieving my goal has remained unwavering.”

Last month, Leon’s heartfelt post asking people to “be human” had gone viral, after the Mosta FC club barman’s laptop was stolen while he was cleaning the bar during a football match. The laptop contained Leon’s entire Master’s thesis which was due the following week, leading him to tell people they could keep the cash inside his laptop bag, but pleading for his thesis to be returned. By the following day, his post had been spread all over Malta, with popular singer Joseph Calleja and others donating enough for the reward to go all the way up to €1,000.

“Your support did not recover my laptop, but it reignited a motivation in me that I hadn’t felt in a long time, helping me complete this dissertation, Leon wrote today, sharing a photo of his finished and printed thesis, entitled ‘The Implementation of Electronic Monitoring in the Maltese Criminal Justice System’.

“This dissertation represents much more than an academic achievement,” he finished. “It is a testament to resilience and perseverance. It has shown me that even in the face of adversity, it is possible to find the strength to move forward and rebuild.”

Congratulations Leon on your achievement!
