In the picturesque Maqluba area, Qrendi Primary School students recently experienced the joys of outdoor learning at Ġnejnet Nikol Aquilina, a charming new pocket garden.

This 1,000-square-metre area of greenery is another example of community collaboration, brought to life by the joint efforts of Project Green, the Qrendi Local Council, and enthusiastic local residents.

Named in tribute to Nikol Aquilina, Qrendi’s pioneering Mayor, the garden is set up with cosy picnic benches, new trees, and shrubs. It’s not just a scenic spot but a welcoming retreat for both locals and visitors.

During their outdoor art class, the students didn’t just paint and draw; they immersed themselves in the environment, bridging the gap between education and nature. This type of setting fosters a deeper appreciation for environmental conservation and community involvement, lessons that extend far beyond the classroom walls.

Minister for the Environment, Miriam Dalli, praised this green endeavour. She highlighted the dual essence of such spaces – they are not only for relaxation but also centres of environmental learning.

Minister Dalli’s call to action for schools was clear: embrace these natural classrooms to nurture environmental consciousness among the younger generation.

Project Green CEO, Steve Ellul, pointed out the garden’s strategic location at the heart of the community. This green space is not only a sanctuary for children but also a comfortable spot for the elderly.

Ellul’s invitation to other local councils to join in creating similar green pockets shows a commitment to returning open spaces to the community, mirroring the success of projects like Ġnejnet Ziam in Kalkara.

Qrendi’s Mayor, David Schembri, expressed heartfelt thanks for the collective efforts that brought this project to fruition. His words underscored a deep commitment to preserving the natural charm and rich cultural heritage of Qrendi, ensuring that such treasures are cherished and maintained for future generations.
