‘We’ll Fight Together’: Qala Mayor Visits Activists In Mosta Square As Graffitti Issues ‘Urgent Call’ To All Councillors

Moviment Graffitti’s action in the Mosta square this morning following the controversial decision to uproot the row of trees synonymous with the area has attracted the attention and support of more than just the town’s residents.

“Qala’s mayor Paul Buttigieg came to visit us,” Graffitti wrote on social media this afternoon.

“Together, we fought to fight Ħondoq ir-Rummien. Together, we will continue fighting to save the environment and the quality of our lives.”

Moments later, Moviment Graffitti returned to social media, this time to make “two urgent calls”  to all of Malta’s councillors.

This is what Graffitti had to say:

(1) “The councillors have the moral obligation to fix the horrendous mistake they did when they approved the uprooting of the Mosta square. Telling us they will be replanted in Santa Margerita means absolutely nothing to the Mosta residents. We want them in the square, so they can offer the beauty, shelter and relaxation which they have for decades.

You made a mistake. But you’re still in the time to fix it. If the trees remain there, the branches which were chopped off will grow back. Call an urgent Council meeting tonight, take a vote, and cancel this decision to uproot the trees from the pjazza.”

(2) “We encourage the public to contact the councillors – on Facebook, via email, call them – to make it clear that they need to answer the residents. You can use the text below:

Dear Councillor,

As a Mosta resident, I am worried and shocked with the way the works are going down in the heart of Mosta, works which include the removal of mature trees near the Rotunda.

These are trees which form a part of Mosta’ urban characters, and have been offering shade and beauty for over 50 years.

As a councillor, I remind you of your principal role of representing us and our interests. You are still in time to chance this decision as a council when it comes to the trees and to save them and the beautiful character of our pjazza. Which is why I’m appealing in a direct way for you to work in our favour and make your voice heard in this regard.

Moviment Graffitti finished up by reminding everyone of the upcoming protest, which is scheduled for tomorrow at 6.30pm in front of the Mosta Local Council office.

Do you agree with Graffitti’s calls to Mosta’s Local Council?
