‘When One Of Is Hurt, All Of Us Are Hurt’: Solidarjeta’ Organises Protest And Fund For Swieqi Landlord Abuse Victim

Union Solidarjetà organised a protest yesterday against the injustice and poor behaviour of a landlord towards his tenants residing in his Swieqi apartments, specifically a shocking attack on a man named Aleksandar Vukoje which went viral last week.

“As a union, we believe, when one of us is hurt, all of us are hurt,” Solidarjeta’ said during yesterday’s demonstration.

“The way Aleksandar was treated, and continues to be treated, by his landlord is unacceptable,” the union continued. “Can you imagine feeling unsafe in your own home? Can you fathom that being woken up by death threats by someone you’ve never met is even a possibility? And to top it all off, would you even believe you’re not dreaming when the police officers you called take the side of the man that did it?”

This comes after a video released by Aleksandar on 13th June showing the landlord in question reportedly breaking into Aleksandar Vukoje’s apartment, specifically his bedroom, while Vukoje was sleeping.

In this video, the landlord can be seen verbally abusing the tenants inside his apartment with such insults and phrases being thrown like “I will make him bankrupt” and threats to “slit his throat” while also repeatedly pridefully stressing to call the police as he was not afraid of the consequences.

As a result of this, Vukoje has been living without water and electricity for a week at the time this article is being written.

Union Solidarjetà has since reached out to Aleksandar and promised to help him file a police report and even started a fund in order to help gain funds for his legal fees.

“These financial contributions will not only help us ensure justice is served in Aleksandar’s case, but will serve as an investment in the betterment of workers’ and tenants’ rights in Malta,” said the secretary-treasurer of Solidarjetà.

He then later thanked those who came to the demonstration in protest.
