140 Bags Of Trash Collected During Five-Hour Comino Clean-Up By Maltese Environmental Groups

A number of Maltese environmental groups recently joined forces in conducting a clean-up on Comino, collecting a whopping 140 bags worth of trash in just five hours.

Collaborating all together, volunteers from Nadur Nadif, Din L-Art Ħelwa, The Cast-Out Project, and 7R Lifestyles Malta set out to the little island of Comino to clean up another area over the past weekend.

All in all, the 140 bags collected amount to approximately 2.3 tonnes of trash, not including all the waste that was previously collected in past clean-up events.

“While having had a successful event in trying to conserve the island’s ecosystem, we still remain appalled by the obscene amount of garbage that has accumulated,” Nadur Nadif said in a statement.

“Even though there have been multiple initiatives by a number of government agencies, there is still much more work that needs to be done,” it stressed.

“The lack of EPU (Environmental Protection Unit) and Environmental Rangers is apparent from what we have seen during these clean-up events.”

“Furthermore, it is obvious that there is surely a need for more investment in the Comino cleansing department and in its police force.”

The Gozo-based NGO continued by appealing to the public that anyone visiting these types of sites around Malta, which had a high level of environmental protection, should do their utmost to keep the islands clean by disposing of their waste in an appropriate manner.

“Let’s be the solution to the conservation of such sites and not the problem!”

Nadur Nadif was set up by the youth ambassador and the Nadur local council in November 2017, aiming to raise awareness on environmental matters in the Maltese islands.

Since its inception, the volunteers of Nadur Nadif aimed to create awareness on the degradation of the environment in the locality, by organising monthly clean-ups.

Well done to all involved!
