180kg Of Pure Tuna Power: Malta’s Fishing Season Officially Kicks Off

Tuna season has officially kicked off in Malta, with the first tuna catch of the year brought into St Paul’s Bay on Wednesday afternoon.

The tuna, each weighing an average of 180 kilograms, marked the start of the much-anticipated season for Malta’s fishing community.

To support fishermen throughout the season, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is offering a free 24-hour offloading service from the Marsaxlokk quay. This service, designed to ease the workload when returning with their catch, is being provided through a modern crawling crane — an investment made possible through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). It’s one of several initiatives focused on modernising and promoting sustainability in Malta’s fisheries sector.

Speaking at the event, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Agriculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja said the moment is important for the local fishing community.

“The arrival of the first tuna represents an important moment for our fishing community who work with dedication at sea,” Bugeja Said said. “Through tangible investments such as the free offloading service and the modern equipment funded by European funds, we are ensuring that our fishermen are equipped with everything they need to work more efficiently, safely, and sustainably.”

She also praised Malta’s fishermen for their hard work and commitment, adding: “Our fishermen are an essential part of our country’s maritime wealth and deserve everyone’s appreciation. This is why the government remains committed to strengthening maritime infrastructure and continuing to support the fisheries sector, which is an integral part of our identity and economy.”
