Environment Minister Miriam Dalli recently announced in parliament that a whopping 6,000 trees and bushes were planted across the Maltese Islands this year as part of a government initiative to promote sustainability and combat climate change.

The initiative, led by Ambjent Malta, focused on enhancing biodiversity and improving public spaces. The newly planted greenery spans various locations, from urban areas to natural reserves, ensuring that both locals and wildlife can benefit from Malta’s greener future.

“This is about leaving a better environment for future generations,” Minister Dalli stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to long-term environmental goals.

The tree-planting projects are part of a broader push to create sustainable spaces and mitigate the effects of urbanisation. With the climate crisis becoming an ever-pressing issue, this initiative is a step toward reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and providing much-needed shade during Malta’s hot summers.

By the end of this year, Project Green is set to issue 22 calls for offers for 22 new open spaces—further proof of Malta’s commitment to greener public areas.

Adding to the positive news, Minister Dalli announced that the Planning Authority has approved a permit for a new garden in Bormla. This green space will replace the area where the AUM dormitory was originally planned to be built, transforming it into a much-needed oasis for the local community.

While there’s still a long road ahead for a greener Malta, 6,000 trees and bushes are definitely a step in the right direction – if they’re kept alive, that is.
