A 12-Year-Old Maltese Student Explains Why It’s Too Late For The Island And We Need To Go Back
A Maltese teacher was struck when one of his 12-year-old students answered an innocent question in the most poignant way ever. Students were asked to comment on a prose passage about the Romans in Malta for their History class, when one student decided it was time to make a statement.
“I had given the students homework on the early Roman period in Malta, and there was a passage on the history of the Romans in Malta – and this student’s answer just struck me,” he said.
Asked whether the students would like to live at the time that the passage is describing – 1st century BC, nearly two millennia back – one student went against the grain and answered in the affirmative:
“Yes, because Malta was not overbuilt at the time.”
“The rest of the answers were pretty obvious answers,” said the teacher. “The question was a bonus question, so to speak, where it’s a bit subjective.”
Giving students the space to express their opinion clearly worked out – the student had never expressed any similar sentiment in class, even though he/she was clearly affected by the sheer amount of construction happening in Malta.
As on-point as their feelings are, we’re not sure we want to go back that far.
“We’re talking around the 1st century BC, it’s quite a long way back,” said the teacher.
