Activist Warns Against ‘Rampant Commercialisation Of Comino For The Elitists’ In Proposed Project

An activist from pressure group Moviment Graffitti has warned against the “rampant commercialisation” that proposed plans of the Comino hotel and bungalow project will inflict on the protected island.

Speaking with Andrew Azzopardi’s radio program on 103, Marie Claire Gatt warned that a significant part of Comino will only be available for the “elitists” if the project is approved.

“The Comino hotel and bungalow project is problematic for two reasons: from an environmental aspect and from a social aspect,” she said.

“The proposed development would be increasing environmental disturbance, ruining current habitats, and leaving a negative impact, especially on Santa Marija Bay,” she warned.

“Then, from a social aspect, we have this rampant commercialisation that will turn this protected island into a place for elitists, that is meant for everyone to enjoy.”

Azzopardi rebutted by saying that this land has already been developed, to which Nick Barbara from BirdLife Malta replied that the bungalows will be increasing, adding that some will occupy undeveloped land.

Barbara also said that the bungalows will increase from 13 to 19, also noting fears they might be sold to private owners.

In a statement published yesterday, HV Hospitality stressed that the bungalows will not be available for sale, after plans to do so were scrapped at an earlier stage.

The developers behind the controversial project are also claiming that the current proposal will reduce the built footprint by 5,122 square metres, and will therefore accommodate fewer guests and create an overall reduction in intensity.

“The new hotel, comprising 71 suites and 19 serviced bungalows, will be operated as a singular facility, targeted solely at travellers seeking rest and relaxation at sustainable properties. Amenities would include a spa, dining spaces, and one mini shop stocked with basic necessities for guests such as newspapers and sunblock,” it explained in a previous statement.
