Another Road To Nowhere: Planning Application Seeks To Create Extended Cul-De-Sac In Gozo
Dubbed “another road to nowhere,” Din L-Art Ħelwa Għawdex recently highlighted a new planning control application proposing to build a new road in Fontana, Gozo.
PC/00032/23 is being proposed to the Planning Authority (PA) for private developers to build a new road which will obliterate a number of fields lying in the back of the houses of Triq Il-Kappillan Ġużepp Hili, Triq l-Isptar San Ġiljan and Triq is-Sajjieda, in Fontana.
The applicant architect is Saviour Micallef, who frequently works with construction tycoon Joseph Portelli and his partner Mark Agius.
“Gozo is becoming well known as the island where we build new roads to nowhere, nowhere that is except to the back pocket of a small number of developers at the detriment of the surrounding communities and to Gozo as a whole,” Din L-Art Ħelwa said in a press statement.
At the moment the application in question is suggesting the “creation of a cul-de-sac as an extension to the current schemed road”.
Activists are even suggesting that the road would then open the area up to further development, as its surrounding area could then become designated for residential dwellings.
“The intention behind this road to nowhere, once opened is, as always, most probably for development purposes giving developers an opportunity to create a huge entirely new and probably housing estate built as block apartments with the usual ugly blank party walls,” it continued.
“This proposed development will obliterate the fields which presently form a green lung amidst a heavily built up area and will face the back gardens of the homes in the before-mentioned roads.”
Up to now this proposal has been quietly brought forward and has only come to the attention of Gozo’s environmental NGO’s due to the efforts of a few community minded individuals.
Like the bulk of Gozo’s population who have seen their way of life and the future of an entire island which was once considered to be the jewel of the Mediterranean they object to seeing our island converted into a building ghetto.
Due to the application being discovered at a later stage, the representations period is open until tonight. Members of the general public are strongly urged to file objections at the PA website using this link.
