Application For Apartments Close To Ġgantija Temples Threatens Xagħra Skyline

A new development application in Xagħra near the neolithic Ġgantija temples is threatening the low skyline and quaint nature of the area.

The development plans to construct a three-storey apartment block, and two swimming pools, as well as excavate the area for garages under the ground floor.

“This is yet another absurd attempt by unscrupulous contractors to take advantage of the quaint area around such a precious site like Ġgantija, putting the said temples at risk of being overshadowed by monstrous modern buildings,” a concerned resident told Lovin Malta.

He also stressed that awareness needs to be raised “about the continuous assault on our national heritage”.

“If the plans are approved by the PA, the block will forever ruin the skyline of this UNESCO world heritage site, apart from the possibility of damaging any discoveries that might be invaluable to us as a nation,” they stressed.

It plans to build a total of ten apartments and thirteen garages below the ground floor, which requires the excavation over a largely unspoilt area, and excavation of two large pools at the back of the property, again over the unspoilt area currently covered with thick vegetation.

While the site for the application in question appears to be within the development zone, residents are concerned about the increasing amount of development in the area.

The site is also situated halfway between the Ġgantija temples and the historic Ta’ Kola Xagħra windmill.

Residents also brought forward their concerns about the proximity of the development to the Ġgantija temples, warning that it will ruin the present skyline.

Representations have also started coming in, with residents pointing out that the site is just over 30 metres away from Ta’ Kola Windmill, which is a Grade one building.

If you’d like to object or share your thoughts on this, you can through the Eapps website, with the permit number being 4782/22.
