‘Blasphemous’: Wirt Għawdex To Appeal Decision Allowing Demolition Of Fort Chambray’s Barracks
Gozo heritage NGO Wirt Għawdex has announced plans to appeal the Planning Authority’s approval of a controversial mega-development within Fort Chambray.
The decision also includes the dismantling of the historic British barracks within the complex, sparking outrage among conservationists.
Wirt Għawdex, known for its dedication to preserving Gozo’s heritage, has been vocal against what it describes as “the ruination of this site at the hands of greed.”
The NGO commissioned a technical report on the fort’s condition and has repeatedly called for its preservation and public access.
The NGO slammed claims made during the Planning Authority’s hearing on 12th December, where it was suggested that demolishing the British Barracks would somehow honour the Knights of Malta.
Wirt Għawdex labelled the argument “blasphemous” and expressed disappointment that this sentiment was echoed by the Culture Ministry.
Wirt Għawdex also criticised successive governments for failing to protect Fort Chambray, questioning why the British Barracks were never scheduled for preservation.
“Was the intention to demolish this historic building harbored all these years?” the NGO asked. They emphasised that the destruction of such historic sites to build apartments for the wealthy is a failure of moral and cultural responsibility.
“Fort Chambray and its historic structures, including the British Barracks, belong to everyone as part of our common heritage,” the NGO said.
“Those who participate in the destruction of this site—by action or inaction—will tarnish their name, and history will judge them.”
