A local environmental NGO has planted over 900 Maltese indigenous trees since 2022.

Coast is Clear shared the milestone earlier this morning, revealing that with the latest 33 trees planted on Friday – in collaboration with Tipico Careers – the organisation’s total now stands at 957 trees.

“Planting trees is the fun part, which happens between October and March,” project coordinator Mark Galea Pace wrote on social media. “The hard part is maintaining and watering them alone during the long, hot summer months.”

Over the past three years, the NGO has teamed up with several companies to sponsor planting events around the country.

Unfortunately, not all of the trees have survived. Vandalism, theft, and drought have reduced the total to 694 living trees.

Vandalism was the main cause, killing 122 trees (12%). Drought accounted for 11%, while theft caused another 4%.

The surviving trees can be found in Pembroke (358), Qawra (245), San Ġwann (47), Chadwick Lakes (12) and other areas (34).

Anyone with land suitable for planting can contact Coast is Clear via social media or WhatsApp on +356 9944 1758 to host new trees.

Well done Coast is Clear!
