Do You Know Of A Maltese Site That Could Become A Green Space? €10 Million Grant Announced

A €10 million grant has been announced for local councils, schools, NGOs and other organisations interested in creating new green spaces in their communities.

The Community Greening Grant, which will make use of EU funds, encourages community leaders to identify sites which have fallen in disrepair or which can be opened to the public.

The scheme will also address issues related to water management faced by the community within their public spaces, to harvest rainwater for irrigation and cleaning, and to mitigate flooding risks.

It is spearheaded by Project Green, a new government entity tasked with creating new green and open spaces across Malta.

Project Green CEO Steve Ellul said the agency will provide technical support before and during project implementation, while funding 90% of the project costs through the Community Greening Grant.

“We are aware that when it comes to such grant applications, applicants face complications and bureaucracy. Therefore, we prepared clear and simple guidelines and conditions. We will truly be investing people’s money for the people,” Ellul said.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said the grant will allow communities to implement green projects that they have always aspired for, while Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Chris Bonett said the grant is an example of how the government is prioritising the environment.

While the government intends to spend €700 on green projects over the next seven years, some have taken a skeptical standpoint on Project Green given the overdevelopment on the island, some of which involves the destruction of natural spaces.

Applications for the grant will remain open until 28th February 2023. If you don’t currently have a green refuge within walking distance of your home, and you have a problem with that reality, an application for this grant could pose a viable solution.

Can you think of a local space near you that you would like to become greener ?
