Don’t Miss Your Chance To Ask Neil Agius Anything: Clean Seas Activist Hosts Q&A In Sliema This Evening

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to swim for hours through a swarm of jellyfish

Well, now’s your chance to find out as Neil Aguis holds an intimate Q&A later this evening!

Speaking ahead of the swim Agius said: “The 100 Mile Swim is not just about setting a world record. More importantly, it is about highlighting the problem of pollution and pollutants in our seas and oceans.”

The swim from Mallorca to the west coast of Ibiza ended prematurely as ultra-endurance swimmer Neil Agius was forced to abandon his ‘100 Mile Swim’.

After swimming straight into a kilometres-long swarm of jellyfish, and already enduring four tantalising hours of the jellyfish onslaught, the swelling simply caused him to be unable to continue.

This incident has prompted Agius’ fans to have countless questions about how the swimmer came to terms with this painful decision. At the Q&A, he will therefore discuss what led him to abandon the swim as well as the jellyfish he encountered along the way.

Aguis will also recount how the experience has sharpened his focus on environmental activism and his plans to take his activism global in the near future.

The swimmer’s efforts are an attempt to raise awareness and persuade governments to sign up for and enforce the United Nations Treaty of the High Seas. The treaty establishes area-based management tools for ocean preservation to conserve and sustainably manage vital habitats and species.

Only 1 percent of the world’s high seas are protected, according to the UN.

In recent weeks Agius has been working closely with leading advocate for the treaty, Lewis Pugh, a UN Patron of the Oceans and an endurance swimmer himself.

Agius has also collaborated with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola as he lobbies governments and officials to endorse and enact the UN’s new rules.

The conversation with Neil will be held at the Beachaüs, Tigne Beach, Sliema, and begins at 6.15pm today.
