A magnitude 4.5 earthquake was detected this morning just under 100km from Malta’s shores.
At 08:06 this morning, seismic detectors picked up signs of a large quake deep below the sea surface.
Despite the earthquake releasing a force equivalent to an explosion of roughly 42.5 tonnes of TNT, very few people in Malta are likely to have felt the tremors. Most of the shock will have been absorbed by kilometres of water above.
The University of Malta’s Seismic Monitoring and Research Group drew a direct line between this most recent earthquake and the series of tremors which struck the islands earlier this year.
Although tremors of this intensity, at this depth and distance from Malta’s shores, are not of significant concern to Malta’s residents, the SMRG will continue to monitor maritime fault lines and expect “seismic activity to be ongoing,” possibly lasting, “several weeks or months”.
