ERA Approves Uprooting Of 100 Trees To Widen Road To Marsalforn
The Environmental and Resources Authority (ERA) has approved the uprooting of 100 trees as part of a development planned to widen the road to Marsalforn.
62 of the trees will be transplanted while 37 will be uprooted and replaced with other trees, Times of Malta reported.
Back in 2021, the Planning Authority approved a plan (PA/03000/19) to widen the arterial road between Victoria and Marsalforn and develop another road aimed at bypassing traffic away from the centre of Victoria.
The Gozo and planning ministry stated that the project intends to also eliminate dangerous bends and introduce walkways and a cycle lane.
On the other hand, NGOs, as well as hundreds of objectors, have argued that these plans will deplete 11,000 square metres of arable land and disrupt il-Wied ta’ Marsalforn.
GP Gozo Consortium was awarded the €9 million tender. According to Newsbook, EU funds will only cover 2% of the cost.
