Foie Gras Production And Fur Farming Are Now Illegal In Malta

The production of foie gras and fur farming are now illegal in Malta, following a new legal notice by the Ministry of Agriculture.

The new subsidiary law, Legal Notice 187 2022 has been taken on positively by plant-based group Veggy Malta, with both changes described to have a positive impact.

“Whilst the Legal Notice does not ban the sale of foie gras or fur locally from any unscrupulous buyer they are a positive step in the right direction and we hope that in itself it will trigger people to think more before they purchase or consume a product coming from animal slavery,” Veggy Malta wrote in a Facebook post.

“We welcome this legal notice and the administrative work needed to get this through by the Ministry of Agriculture. Let’s give credit when it is due!”

Foie gras is achieved through the fattening of the liver of geese or ducks to around 10 times the liver’s normal size, with Veggy Malta describing it as “another barbaric animal agriculture”.

This includes a process called gavage, which is essentially like force-feeding, demanding ducks or geese to be force-fed to achieve foie gras.

Through this legal notice, Malta has now also joined the list of European Union countries that have banned fur farming.

“This is a great step forward and will ensure that no company can come and open a fur farm locally.”

“It is also significantly important when we also take this in the context of the European Citizen’s Initiative: Fur Free Europe, which is currently underway, and we strongly urge all to sign,” Veggy Malta said.

“These are the type of bold, progressive actions that need to be taken in favour of animals.”

“Malta needs to have the courage to take further steps, especially since we do not have a large animal agricultural industry like other EU countries, which should lead us to move away from animal-based agriculture and invest in the production of alternative foods that are animal friendly and also planet friendly,” it concluded.
