‘Fgajtuna’: Birżebbuġa Residents Feeling ‘Choked’ By Foul Fish Smell From Ħal Far Tuna Recycling Plant
Birżebbuġa residents have once again expressed how “choked” they’re feeling by the foul fish smell originating from the Ħal Far tuna recycling plant.
Residents living close to the recycling plant have been voicing their complaints for months now – since the facility opened in September.
“The smell of fish in Birżebbuġa is exaggerated, and the residents are all miserable and feeling choked by it,” a resident told Lovin Malta.
“We are really fed up with no one listening to us,” they said.
Residents have already taken their complaints to a number of authorities, including the local council, the Environment and Resources Authority, and a number of Ministers in the district, however, the situation remained the same.
They are also accusing the local council of “not doing enough” about the situation, hoping that more can be done to better the situation.
Ħal Far’s tuna recycling plant is a project of some of the main players in the industry, namely Azzopardi Fisheries, MFF, and Fish and Fish. It will process around 4,000 tonnes of tuna remains every year.
Prior to the plant, the remains, which consist of the insides, the head, the spine, and the tail, were usually thrown were thrown out at sea, around 11 nautical miles off the coast with the approval of authorities.
The plant manufactures products like oils which can be used for animal and fish feed.
Still, it appears that the plant is causing a major nuisance to residents of the area. However, it remains to be seen whether any action will be taken.
