A makeshift wooden gate and a fence made of barbed wire have recently popped up at Mellieħa’s Għar Tuta, otherwise known as Latnija Cave.

Although it has not yet been identified when the fence was put in place, hikers and climbers who frequent the area have confirmed that this was a recent intervention.

Local explorer and vlogger Pierre Farrugia uploaded a video of his hike in the area, questioning why a fence and gate suddenly showed up there.

“The first thing that struck me was that there was a fence and a gate… and have no clue why they are there,” Farrugia expressed with Lovin Malta.

The area contains archaeological remains, with a number of pottery shreds being previously found, which possibly date back to Roman and Byzantine times.

Lovin Malta has reached out to the FKNK, which is responsible for taking care of the land, for clarification on the matter.
