Gozo Ministry Remains Silent On Comino’s Blue Lagoon Deckchairs Takeover

The Gozo Ministry has chosen to remain silent over the monopolisation of Comino’s Blue Lagoon shoreline with privately-owned deckchairs.

Responding to questions sent by Lovin Malta, a spokesperson for the Gozo Ministry said that Minister Clint Camilleri has nothing else to add regarding the matter.

While Comino technically falls under the Ministry of Gozo, Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo last week pledged that the Tourism Ministry will be dealing with the issue.

Following activist group Moviment Graffitti’s action over the weekend which went viral all over Malta, people are now eagerly waiting for action from authorities.

Activists are also pledging to allow a one-week chance for the government to take action, and if not, a repetition of last Saturday will occur once again.

“We know that the struggle did not end with yesterday’s direct action. Our demand to stop the businesses’ greed that has taken over Blue Lagoon and Comino – catamarans in a small bay, deckchairs and umbrellas, enormous kiosks and closed access to San Niklaw – is only going to get stronger until the authorities take the actions necessary,” Moviment Graffitti pledged yesterday.

Last week, the pressure group also wrote an open letter to five ministers outlining six demands related to Blue Lagoon and Comino as a whole.

Among the requests, limits on how many people enter Comino and the non-imposition of private deckchairs on public land are being stressed.

Last Saturday, Lovin Malta was reporting live from Comino’s Blue Lagoon as activists carried out the direct action.

Activists headed to the island of Comino in the early hours of the morning, and proceeded to remove deckchairs from the shoreline that were already there by 8am.

As it stands, deckchair vendors are covering every inch of the shoreline with deckchairs and umbrellas from the crack of dawn, making it practically impossible to enjoy this beautiful place unless you’re ready to pay €12.50 per person.

Do you think it’s high time the Government takes action about this issue?
